That's it...I'm moving to Canada!!

Well, not really. There are many things I love about America, but there are some things that just baffle me. I saw Michael Moore's "Sicko" last night and it really opened my mind to the enormous healthcare problem we have in this country. I don't understand why countries like Canada, France, and England all have universal free healthcare, but the U.S can't seem to get with the program. The film is very sad. It emphasizes that those that are lucky enough to get healthcare in the first place usually get screwed over anyway. The healthcare industry is a big money-making scheme when it should be about getting people better. For instance, I got teary during a part of the movie where this woman was talking about her husband and the fact that he had come down with Cancer. The doctors told him the only way he would be able to live was if he had a bone marrow transplant. So, they tested his two brothers and his youngest brother was a perfect match. One would think that things would be hunky dorry from this point on. They had insurance, they had a match...but no, things were not hunky dorry. His insurance company DENIED the bone marrow transplant and claimed that it was an experimental procedure (even though the doctors said he needed it). A few months later the man died. This ISN'T RIGHT. Why the hell should insurance companies be playing God and determining who lives and who dies!?
Did you know there are entire departments in insurance companies that's sole purpose is to find loop holes with which they can deny previously accepted procedures?? If they have accepted someone's procedure they have people scour the person's medical records looking for anything that might make them deny it. How horrible is that?
Something needs to be done. Yes, the taxes would be higher...but you know what if I can't buy as many shirts one month and it saves someone's life....I think I am okay with that. We need to get over the greed and help one another. This country shouldn't be one man for himself, it should be about neighbors and friends and loved ones working together to truly make The American Dream.
I suggest you see "Sicko"...it will definitely open your eyes and mind to this enormous problem.
Later, gators.

Are you sure you don't want to move to DC and work in policy or advocacy? I hope to see Sicko soon.

I suspect we will get some form of real universal healthcare under the next Administration - regardless of who it is. Probably even if it is a Republican.
